Week in Review: Sept 5-9

Week in Review: Sept 5-9

September 9, 2022 by NC OJD

Fri-YAY! Cheers to a short week and a quick start to another weekend. It’s been a quiet week for OJD but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a tip to share and a resource for our favorite attorneys. Let’s get to it!

Tip of the Week: Housing Collateral Consequences

Counsel should advise clients appropriately involving potential consequences of adjudication including housing and immigration consequences. Federal law bans three categories of people from admission to public housing: those who have been convicted of methamphetamine production on the premises of federally funded housing, who are banned for life; those subject to lifetime registration requirements under state sex offender registration programs; and people who are currently using illegal drugs, regardless of whether they have been convicted of any drug-related offense. Because of this, it is imperative to not only explain these consequences to your client, but to parents, and other court officials to make them aware of the impact this can have on stable living for our youth.

NEW OJD TRAINING CALENDAR!!!

OJD is excited to announce our new upcoming Virtual Series. Each month, we will host a virtual CLE on a relevant and pertinent topic to youth defenders! OJD will cover the CLE costs for the first 30 attendees for each CLE, so register early! To register for any of our upcoming trainings, visit https://www.ncjuveniledefender.com/trainingcalendar to sign up for any of our upcoming trainings and bookmark this page for regular updates!
