We are very excited to welcome 2 amazing externs this year! We'd love to introduce Aleisha Santos and Kaylee Market to our defender community this summer. They are both law students at Campbell and are very enthusiastic to learn more about juvenile law and youth defense in North Carolina.
Aleisha is currently a rising 2L (second-year law student) at Campbell University. She spent over eighteen years in New Jersey before relocating to North Carolina in 2018. Aleisha graduated cum laude from Liberty University with a B.S. in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. Aleisha comes to OJD with a strong background in juvenile justice. Alongside her externship with our office, she serves as the Restorative Justice Program Assistant for a non-profit in Wayne County, where she oversees diversion programs for at-risk youth, a position she has held for the past three years.
She has served on various committees within her community, including the North Carolina Association of Community Restitution Programs and the Wayne County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council. Aleisha is also very interested in post-conviction work. While at Campbell, she completes pro-bono work with the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence and the Campbell Law Innocence Project to evaluate claims and make recommendations on potential wrongful convictions in criminal cases. When she is not working or studying, Aleisha enjoys trying out new coffee shops, reading, or playing with her dog, Rylie.

Kaylee is originally from South Florida; she graduated from high school in Charlotte, North Carolina before moving to Wilmington to attend the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She majored in Criminology and Political Science and minored in Russian Studies. Kaylee interned at the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office in college before working at a private firm as a legal assistant for a couple of years. She currently attends Campbell Law School and will graduate in May of 2025. Kaylee enjoys spending time with her dog, reading, and crafting in her free time.
We're glad to be part of their journey of becoming lawyers and we encourage all youth defenders to say hi and if possible, make yourself available for questions or mentorship. It is always comforting to feel the sense of community, especially in such an important professional path.
