Defenders!
We hope your 2023 in off to great to start! As we get into the swing of the new year, OJD wanted to make sure you knew about our new Back to Basics component of our virtual training series. In 2022, we introduced our monthly virtual series and training calendar which gives defenders a forecast of our upcoming virtual trainings and the ability to pre-register. OJD wants to continue to provide trainings on a wide array of topics while also responding to many of the requests that we’ve received during our court visits. In addition to our current training offerings, attorneys throughout the state have asked for trainings on foundational youth defense topics. To make these trainings available to attorneys statewide, OJD decided to incorporate trainings on these foundational topics in our virtual training schedule! Don’t worry, we will still offer trainings on other intermediate and advanced topics too. Our training schedule will rotate and every other month, we will have a Back to Basics foundational topic!
Our first Back to Basics virtual training will be on February 10, 2023. It will be a Juvenile Delinquency 101 training presented by Assistant Juvenile Defender Burcu Hensley and Assistant Public Defender Veronika Monteleone with the Gaston County Public Defender Office. The training will give an overview of the juvenile delinquency system and the differences between juvenile delinquency court and adult criminal court. We hope you can join us! After that, our next Back to Basics training will be on April 14, 2023. It will cover Role of Counsel and will feature Juvenile Defender Eric Zogry. With this series, you can expect trainings on additional topics such as Secured Custody and Shackling Advocacy, Capacity 101, Disposition Advocacy, and more!
We hope you can join us for these trainings and for all the trainings in our virtual series! On the months that we don’t have a Back to Basics foundational topic, we will continue to train on various issues and topics important for youth defenders such as racial justice, military collateral consequences, comprehensive clinical assessment components, and time frames, digital evidence, and more. We hope to see you at a training soon!
