About the event

OJD welcomes defenders to the North Carolina Justice Center for a full day of training on defending juveniles charged with first degree murder. This training is intended to provide insight into the front end of a first degree murder charge for youth 13 to 17 years of age. We will discuss procedures and logistics defenders should know while the case is still in juvenile delinquency court as well as tips and strategies for working with youth once transferred to the adult criminal justice system.

This training is open to all defenders, but will be required for any attorney interested in applying for the Juvenile First Degree Murder appointment roster when that is approved and activated.

This training is separate from additional trainings offered by OJD on the logistics and process of the appointment roster.

Agenda & CLE Credit

Please join us for a full day of learning. This training offers 6.25 hours of general CLE credit, pending approval from the NC State Bar. Registration is free for everyone, and OJD will cover the CLE costs of the first 50 attorneys to register and attend the training. Otherwise, the State Bar will bill $3.50 per credit hour to any attorney wishing to claim the CLE credit. Please see our agenda below, but remember it is subject to modifications. We suggest attendees arrive before 8:30 to allow for time to park, register, and find a comfortable seat.

Lunch

We are happy to preorder box lunches for attorneys. Stephenson's Bakery provides six different sandwich options, which are served with chips and a cookie, and six different salad options, which are served with a French roll and a cookie. All lunches come with iced tea. Box lunches are provided at the State Rate of $13.30 and attendees can bring a check or cash to the registration table the morning of the training.

***Please indicate during registration whether you will order a box lunch (sandwich and salad options detailed on registration form).

The North Carolina Judicial Center also has an on-site cafeteria (The Lady Justice Cafe) as well as vending machines with sodas, chips, and other snacks.

Parking

Parking is available on site at no charge.

Technology Tips

The North Carolina Judicial Center has open wi-fi available to attendees. The room will be set up classroom style and not all seats will have ports available easily for charging laptops, so please be sure to charge your technology prior to arrival. We will make all materials available to attendees ahead of time so that you may access them digitally. If you would like hardcopies of presentations and resources, please plan to print your hardcopies ahead of time.
